The Bible’s teaching on this question is simple, clear and unequivocal: a believer may only marry another born-again believer. To do otherwise is a sin that carries potentially life-long, negative spiritual consequences and personal hardship. Paul says:. The command of scripture is that a believer not be bound together with unbelievers. The Greek word translated into bound is heterozugeo, which literally means to be yoked together in a single team. When a farmer prepared to plow his field, he yoked two oxen together to pull the plow blade through the soil. The farmer would chose a pair of animals that were similar in size and strength so that they would pull together in unison, creating straight lines in the field. If the oxen team were imbalanced – if one ox were stronger or larger than the other – then the team couldn’t pull with equal power. The oxen team would eventually go astray, leaving the straight rows and meandering off course. So the concept Paul teaches us is that a believer must not become yoked together with someone who does not agree with the believer’s perspective of God, faith, godliness and obedience to Christ.

In light of this, we recognize the delicate nature of the scenario. Firstly, Paul the apostle warned the Corinthian church and every believer by extension against intimate relationships with unbelievers. He starts off in 1 st Corinthians where he is replying to a question of remarrying. He gives the requirements for remarrying but qualifies it with an important caveat: the person must be in the LORD.
The scriptures here blatantly state that believers should marry believers.
14 – Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion.
After all, the guy is willing to go to church with you, and is even okay with your faith. It was because the people of the land, in that day, worshipped pagan gods. It was meant as protection. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? He does so because He is all wise.

I have received a few emails from Christians and even one from a non-Christian asking if it is okay for a Christian to date or marry an unbeliever. Usually, by the time the question is asked, the relationship has gone far enough that a negative answer is going to be difficult to accept, even if it is the right answer.
The short answer is “no. Do not be bound together [unequally yoked] with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? As with any Bible verse, one should never accept it on face value without first checking the context. The context is found in the verses following 2 Corinthians Verse 16 also makes a reference to the Old Testament prophecies that God will put His laws into the hearts of believers and “I will be their God, and they will be My people.
The concept of being separated from unbelievers originally comes from the Old Testament.

But the temptation to get romantically involved with a non-Christian tends to be framed differently. In this article, I shall not be trying to give a method for counseling people who are facing such a temptation. Such an article would include a clearer picture of what marriage looks like: making decisions about career, where to live, how to spend money, how to raise children, etc.
All of this is compounded when you and your spouse are living for different things. To explore some of those things better, consider this article. Rather, I shall offer a brief biblical theology of dating unbelievers. I want to make the point that it is a matter of obedience to God not to pursue a relationship with a non-believer. My hope is that this article will be of some use to people in such a situation, but of more use to the Christian who, long before the temptation arises, needs to make a stronger resolve not to get romantically involved with a non-Christian.
And just to be clear: getting romantically involved is likely to happen if you spend a great deal of time with someone of the opposite sex one-on-one.

Melody Green. AAA Pro Life. Why You Shouldn’t Marry or Date an Unbeliever By Melody Green At first glance, it may seem that an article such as this is unnecessary – that anyone who loves God could not possibly consider spending their whole life married to someone who doesn’t! This, unfortunately, is not the case. I receive letters daily from women who are desperately trying to serve God in a full and complete way, but are unable to do so because their husband loves and serves the world.
I am addressing this article to Christian women in particular, because in my counseling experience, they seem to make this mistake much more, frequently than men do. However, the problems and the principles I will be talking about can obviously be applied to any Christian thinking of marrying or for that matter even dating someone who doesn’t love Jesus with all of their heart. This article is not for those of you who were first married and then became a Christian at a later date.
Can I Date an Unbeliever?
Often but not always , those who are pondering this question readily acknowledge that the Bible says a Christian cannot marry a non-Christian. Nevertheless, they believe they can move down this path because 1 the Bible does not forbid dating an unbeliever; or 2 their romantic relationship can serve as a means of evangelism to the unbelieving boyfriend or girlfriend; or 3 their situation is unique; 4 a combination of some or all of the above.
Is Dating in the Bible? That last statement might cause a few biblically-minded Christians to stumble. But we need to be precise at this point so that we do not attempt to protect a clear commandment you cannot marry an unbeliever; see 1 Cor with an extra-biblical rule you cannot date an unbeliever.
When it comes to dating a non-Christian, the Bible does not say anything directly about this because dating as we know it was not a custom in biblical times. While the Bible does not say anything about dating, the Bible does give Christians direct commands about not marrying non-Christians. Since the most biblical purpose for dating is to determine if two people want to marry, I believe all that the Bible says about not marrying an unbeliever applies to the topic of whether or not it is okay for Christians to date non-Christians.
But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial?

Yet the Bible records thousands of years of narrative to cover the ups and to in 2 Corinthians when he said, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity. Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
Do two men walk together unless they have made an appointment? Do not associate with a man given to anger; Or go with a hot-tempered man,. Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.
